SIMON SAYS....Ten Seconds Can Change Your Life Forever......for the good or for the bad...the choice is yours and the choice will always be yours... You see, in life we have the freedom to choose.....the places we go, the food we eat, the people we see and even the clothes we wear....but you know what we never have the freedom of? We never have the freedom of consequence....and I am here to share with you that when you fail to control the events in your life.....then someday the events will control you.... Alcohol is still the #1 killer amongst teens in America. The national Institute on Alcohol abuse says young people who began drinking before the age of 15 are 4 times more likely to become alcoholics and twice as likely to have other abuse problems. Teens see more drug deals at school than near their homes and neighborhood, which accounts for the 66% of youth that knew of someone using hard drugs. A recent poll found a rise in the use of cocaine, methamphetamines, LSD and heroin among youths ages 12-17. So lets face- it we do not just have a problem on our hands. We have an epidemic out of control and will it ever begin to fade? Drugs and alcohlol play such a huge part in our culture. In today's world, if a 2nd or 3rd grader does not know what weed is, there is something wrong with them. And that is a shame. SIMON SAYS.... Each day in America 62 people die because of alcohol related deaths. That equals out to 22,630 people per year. 64% of teenagers lose their virginity while intoxicated and teen age pregnancy is out of control in this country. No matter what the statistic, much of the time drugs and alcohol play a role. The truth is that the younger people start drinking the higher risk they have of becoming alcoholics or experiencing problems related to alcohol. So what is wrong with children these days? It has very little to do with our schools as some critics would want us to believe. Instead, it has to do with our society's priorities. In one week, children spend one 1/2 hours alone with their father, 2 1/2 hours alone with their mother, 2 hours per week reading, 5 hours per week doing homework, and 28 hours a week watching TV. So after close supervision all day in school, millions of kids find themselves suddenly on their own at 3 pm. When we send millions of young people out on the streets after school with no responsible supervision or constructive activities, we reap what we sow. A massive dose of juvenile crime. In the one hour after the school bell rings, juvenile crime triples in America. So what do we do? We need the entire community to get involved in fighting this drug and alcohol epidemic, which in turn reflects on so many negative statistics. It does take a village to raise a child! SIMON SAYS... I believe first and foremost, our youth must hear it from parents in the home. Then it must be reinforced in our schools. And then, every so often it's a powerful experience to have these same values echoed by someone who's not the parent or the teacher. Somoene who can communicate these values in a dynamic way in front of all their peers at one time. SIMON SAYS... In my experience traveling and speaking with hundreds of thousands of people across this mighty nation called America. I've had the privilage of seeing many lives impacted and changed. Day after day students, teachers or parents, comment to me, "I finally get it!" or "It makes sense." I firmly believe that students need to hear positive messages about life choices over and over, and from as many different voices as possible. And you know what? Eventually it "sinks in."
